I appreciated your reference to Fujimura. I've loved his work for many years but have never seen it in person until recently when I got to see the enormous painting "Silence". I have extreme hearing loss and wear hearing aids. I turned them off and sat in front of the painting for many minutes in literal silence. It was a powerful experience. Since then, I have been very aware of little silences, in between spaces, and pauses in all kinds of places. I love the idea of these silences built in to Sappho's lines and how they invite us to pause and consider. In a culture of hustle, bustle, and noise, that is a beautiful invitation.
I have never heard of Sappho but I do love learning about women from history and I love poetry. I just finished "The Devil's Tour" (poems) by Mary Karr, and am about halfway through your book, Learning the Good Life - I read one or two entries per day.
I recently picked up The Overstory by Richard Powers that I'm excited to get into.
PS (this was me! the person who met you at Regent!)
